Medical dictation in your browser

Speech to text turns what you say into written text. For clinicians that means dictating a history, an exam, a referral letter or a quick note to self instead of typing it. This page does exactly that, free: record up to a minute, wait a few seconds, and edit the transcript in the box. Record again and the new text is added underneath, so you can dictate in short pieces.

How to get a clean transcript

  1. Use a quiet room and a decent microphone. A headset or your phone held close works better than a laptop microphone across the desk.
  2. Speak at a normal pace, in full phrases. Pausing between thoughts is fine.
  3. Spell out what matters. Say doses with their units (“five hundred milligrams twice daily”) and check drug names in the transcript: a general speech model can mishear them.
  4. Leave out identifiers. Do not say names, dates of birth or record numbers. Nothing you say here is stored, but this page is not the place for patient records.
  5. Read before you paste. Fix any misheard word in the text box, then press Copy transcript.

Dictation vs an AI scribe

Dictation gives you the words you said, in the order you said them. You still shape them into a note. An AI scribe goes a step further: it listens, then writes the structured note for you. If you want that, try the free AI scribe, which uses the same recorder and returns a SOAP note instead of a transcript.

PatientNotes, the full product, records whole visits on your phone or in the browser and writes the note in your own template. For other options, see our comparison of medical voice recognition software and our guide to medical dictation apps and devices.

Let PatientNotes write the note from the visit

This page is a free sample. PatientNotes records the whole visit on your phone or in the browser, writes the note in your own template, suggests ICD-10 and CPT codes, and is HIPAA compliant with a BAA included. 7-day free trial, no card. Then $50/user/mo billed annually, or $70 month to month.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Is this free medical dictation software?

It is a free dictation tool in your browser, with no download or signup. Speak for up to 60 seconds, then edit and copy the text. For dictating all day, or recording whole visits, you will want a dedicated tool such as PatientNotes.

How accurate is it with medical terms?

It uses a general-purpose speech recognition model, so common clinical language usually comes through well, but drug names, doses and rare terms can be misheard. Always read the transcript before you use it, and correct anything that is off.

Which languages does it understand?

The spoken language is detected automatically, so you can dictate in languages other than English. The transcript is in the language you spoke.

Can it turn my dictation into a SOAP note?

This page gives you the plain transcript. To turn dictation into a structured note, use the free AI scribe or the SOAP note generator, which share the same recorder.

Is it really free? Are there limits?

Yes, it is free with no signup. To keep it fast for everyone, each visitor can generate up to 5 notes an hour and 15 a day, and record up to 5 clips an hour of up to 60 seconds each. PatientNotes itself has no such limits.

Is it HIPAA compliant? Can I enter patient information?

Don't enter or say names, dates of birth, record numbers or other identifiers. Your text and audio are sent to our AI providers to do the work, and PatientNotes doesn't store what you enter, the recording or the result. Treat this page as a drafting aid for de-identified notes. For real patient records, use PatientNotes itself, which is built for patient data and signs a Business Associate Agreement (BAA).
